Pan-fry sliced firm tofu in a little oil until golden. In the same pan, add 1 tbsp minced garlic, 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp starch syrup (or sugar), 1 tsp gochujang, 1 tsp chili powder, 3 tbsp water, and stir in sliced onion and shallots. Simmer the tofu in this sauce for 5–8 minutes until the flavors soak in. Finish with a drizzle of sesame oil and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.
