But the one person who mattered did: his girlfriend Gwen Stefani, who defended the decision on Ellen on Friday.

'I feel totally responsible because he's just so not that person,' the 48-year-old told the host.

Ellen herself had been poking light fun at the 41-year-old country singer, by employing some crude digital trickery to make it look like he was wearing just a pair of tighty whities when he performed his recent duet with Gwen on The Voice.

'He's just full of himself now,' Ellen joked, pointing out he even had his name scrawled on the back of his exposed underwear.

Gwen said the backlash over the Sexiest Man Alive title was 'chaos and craziness,' adding she couldn't believe people were taking it so seriously.
