Sony RX1R III: A Decade-Long Wait Ends with Major Upgrades
Hello, I’m Riven, your go-to guide for all things tech! If you want to stay ahead with the latest product updates from top brands, you’re in the right place. Today, I’m excited to talk about the Sony RX1R III, a major update after 10 years for Sony’s compact, full-frame camera.
The Sony RX1R III offers several key upgrades. While it retains the 35mm full-frame Exmor R sensor from its predecessor, it has increased the resolution from 42.4MP to 61MP for even greater detail. Equipped with the latest
Bionz XR and AI image processors, it now provides superior autofocus, tracking human movement, and focusing precisely on heads and eyes.
The RX1R III will be available in July for around $5,099.99, a notable increase from the $3,300 launch price of the previous RX1R II. It competes directly with other high-end fixed-lens cameras such as the Fujifilm GFX100RF ($4,899.95) and the Leica Q3 ($5,995), offering a more compact option with full-frame performance.
Despite the fixed lens, the RX1R III includes a
Step Crop Shooting function, allowing photographers to switch between 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm focal lengths through sensor cropping. It also features a macro mode for focusing as close as 20cm with the lens’s ring.
The body of the RX1R III is made of magnesium alloy, making it both lightweight and durable. However, it now has a fixed screen on the back that no longer tilts, which may make low-angle shots more challenging but still manageable with the
2.36 million dot OLED electronic viewfinder.
In terms of performance, the RX1R III shoots at 5 fps and captures 4K video at 30 fps or 1080p at 120 fps. It also supports Sony's S-Cinetone picture profile for a cinematic video look. The 693 phase-detection autofocus points ensure subjects are in focus, even when their eyes are not directly facing the camera.
This upgrade offers impressive enhancements over the previous model, but if you're willing to go for something a bit bulkier, Sony has other more affordable and capable alternatives.
